Opened in 1931, it’s widely recognized as the first planned outdoor shopping mall in the United States. Designed in a Spanish Mediterranean style, its tiled roofs, archways, and courtyards created an experience that felt less like errands and more like an afternoon.

And while plenty of places have followed, few have matched its charm or staying power.
