Much of Manhattan sits atop extremely strong metamorphic bedrock, primarily Manhattan schist, along with layers of gneiss and marble. This hard, stable rock is capable of supporting immense weight, allowing engineers to anchor skyscrapers directly into it. The presence of Manhattan schist, in particular, is a key reason why some of the world’s tallest and earliest skyscrapers were able to be built here.

In areas where this bedrock is closer to the surface—such as Midtown and Lower Manhattan—construction of tall buildings became more feasible and cost-effective. Without this underlying geological strength, the immense weight of skyscrapers could cause significant settling or structural instability over time. Instead, Manhattan’s natural foundation has made it one of the most structurally suitable places in the world for vertical urban growth.
