Swiss Avenue didn’t start as the grand boulevard we know today. In the mid-1800s, it was little more than a muddy country lane, later named by a Swiss immigrant, Henri Boll, as a nod to his homeland. What followed was one of the most intentional developments in Dallas history.
 
In 1905, the Munger brothers set out to create what they called the most desirable residential district in the South. Swiss Avenue became its centerpiece—a landscaped boulevard designed for the city’s elite. Strict deed restrictions required homes to be large, architecturally significant, and set back uniformly from the street, ensuring a sense of scale and elegance that still defines the avenue today.
 
Over time, the street faced real threats of decline and redevelopment, but a small group of dedicated residents stepped in during the 1970s to preserve it—ultimately establishing Swiss Avenue as Dallas’ first historic district. That effort is the reason the avenue still feels cohesive, storied, and remarkably intact.
