St. Mark’s Campanile, the iconic bell tower of Venice, stands in Piazza San Marco and is one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Originally constructed in the 9th century and rebuilt several times, the tower reached its definitive form in the 16th century, serving both as a watchtower and a lighthouse guiding ships safely into the Venetian Lagoon.

Rising approximately 323 feet (98.6 meters), the tower is notable for its simple, elegant design—contrasting with the ornate architecture of the nearby Basilica di San Marco. At its summit sits a belfry housing five bells, each historically used for different civic purposes, from marking time to signaling public events and executions.

In 1902, the original tower suddenly collapsed due to structural weaknesses, remarkably causing no fatalities aside from a caretaker’s cat. The tower was rebuilt exactly as it had been, reopening in 1912 with the guiding principle “com’era, dov’era” (“as it was, where it was”).

Today, St. Mark’s Campanile remains both a historical monument and a functioning bell tower, offering panoramic views of Venice while standing as a symbol of the city’s resilience and enduring architectural legacy.
